Bookless Library For The Future Coming Soon To Newport Beach
According to ancient Roman philosopher Cicero, a library is one of the 2 keys to fulfilling need. Yet the libraries Cicero knew were quite diverse from what society has known in recent decades – and even more so as the world enters the ebook age. In accordance with the Los Angeles Times, one more library – the Newport Beach Public Library in Newport Beach, California – is moving toward abandoning books entirely and replacing them with electronic books.
Exact same space and features in bookless library
Increasingly more in the public have been interested in the idea of book-free libraries considering it is becoming much more costly to print books and Amazon Kindle and Barnes and Noble Nooks have become very popular. There are so many things that have to be paid in the book publishing industry as it is traditionally known. The retailer, author royalty, wholesaler, pre-production, printing, marketing and publisher all want some money off the sale. Electronic books are much less complicated and less costly to produce. The Newport Beach Public Library will resemble a traditional library upon entry, however that’s where the resemblance will end. The exact same informational kiosk can be located up front, but rather than an attendant there can be a computer. There won’t be any bookshelves in the library, which makes sense. Wireless Internet access will enable patrons to read via electronic book readers and quiet study space could be maintained. The kiosk software will allow patrons to order printed books if they are required. After a few days, books are delivered to a locker for pickup, in a manner resembling the delivery of DVDs and Blu-ray discs from Netflix via postal mail.
Changing economies, changing readers
When it comes to having bookless libraries around, several colleges tend to be ahead for instance The University of Texas in San Antonio and California’s Stanford University. The library was able to create more study room instead of the books for engineering and technology. The books were changed with over 18,000 e-journal subscriptions and 425,000 e-books. A quarter of the books at Stanford, about 18,000, have been changed as of 2010 summer. The needs keep changing which libraries are attempting to keep up with by going to book-free libraries. Numerous studies conducted at the Newport Beach Public Library found that more patrons came to the library to use the Wi-Fi connection and study in a quiet space rather than to have a look at books. Thus, the idea of the Netflix-style delivery system was born. Not everybody agrees though.
“That caused me the most angst,” said Newport Beach City Manager Dave Kiff, who helped develop the library’s bookless plan. “People identify (book) stacks with the library.”
However, even Kiff acknowledges the importance of serving the public as they expect to be served today, rather than how they were served 20 or 30 years back. The Los Angeles Times spoke with Nancy Acone on the board of Newport Beach Friend of the Library who said it is important to adapt.
“You don’t want to be like the railroads and go out of business,” she said.
