Not Anymore A Child, But Still An Artist

There is nothing that distinguishes animal portrait painting from human portrait painting except for the fact that animals don’t like posing. Maintaining an animal’s attention is not a simple task for an artist to do. It is in this particular field that the artist from Wilmington became an expert. She is also a Delaware, which is a prominent family locally. She has a grandfather whose artwork included a famous collection of sea and landscape paintings. Thus it is not surprising that this female artist started to paint at 3 years of age. Read this site if you want pets portraits information.

Animal drawings were her favorites. She displayed her work at her own one man show at the local library at age 12 and started illustrating books at age 12. She got to learn how to dance a number of different kinds of dances because of the help she had been getting from her Philadelphia teachers. Among the solo dances she did for the many years she was a dancer was a death scene depicting her accidentally drinking from a kerosene lamp.

She paints a lot of animal portraits, but painting man’s best friend the dog is her main focus. The way she starts on a dog’s portraits grabs at your interest. While the owner of the dog does what he can to keep the dog from changing positions, she makes many sketches of the dog.

As she looks for the best pose that would suit the dog, her pencil just continues to fly over the sketchpad with amazing speed. While she is doing this, she is talking to the dog, telling him he is beautiful and that he is a good dog. To maintain the animal’s interest, she uses a variety of props and sometimes even bits of food. She requests for the photographs of the dog that the owner has and then asks if it’s okay for her to duplicate any of them for her collection. She cuts strands of hair from the dog’s tail, ears, and tummy to collect and observe their colors. The snips are kept under the dog’s file. You will find that further information on pet portrait painter is on that site.

Then comes the selection of a pose and a composition with a suitable background. The latter is selected according to the type of dog or animal. For a portrait that showed a Chesapeake Bay retriever, she decided to do sketches while seated in a duck blind.

She says that animals can be judges, just like humans. Trying to prove himself a connoisseur, an American pointer snuck up behind an artist and practically mangled her worst painting. The dog had to be given heavy doses of medication afterwards, so it must have been really a bad painting for him to have chewed through it.

If the portrait features a beagle or a basset, she includes a paw print in the scenery and puts the kennel club’s identifying symbols on the back. Her own dog helped in even creating abstract backgrounds. Animals are bent on giving artists a difficult time. She had an experience where she had to stop portrait painting for the day since one of the models ran off with a female. Ordinary as it may be, it just shows that the unusual can take place when an animal’s portrait is being made.
